Social media: just because everyone has them, or with strategy and the right content?

The days when a business could simply have any kind of presence on social media are long gone. If you want your online presence to be effective and competitive today, you need a clear strategy and the right content.

Wherever we look, at work, at home, on the street, in our social circles, it is obvious that most people spend a big part of their day on their phones, mainly browsing social media. Each person for their own reasons.

In Greece, 3 out of 5 people have a profile on a social platform. Keep in mind: some of them are your future customers. Internet use and the growth of social media have changed daily habits and, with them, the way we identify needs and choose a doctor or lawyer, or decide where to shop.

In the past, the reputation of a doctor or lawyer might have been enough to attract new clients through word of mouth. Today, that is only partly true. With social media, thousands of businesses compete for the most valuable resource: people’s attention and time.

A brand’s unique identity is one of the most important factors that determines whether a business gains an advantage in this competition or disappears in the noise. Social media offer a real opportunity for businesses that use them strategically, because they help you reach potential customers where they spend most of their time.

What does social media marketing mean?

Social media marketing is the process of creating and managing an online presence for a business that is consistent, focused, and aligned with the preferences and needs of its audience. It is a key part of branding, because for many people social platforms are their first contact with your business.

Despite what many believe, social media marketing is not only about matching colours, choosing clever images, or posting frequently. It is mainly about carefully building content and a brand story that creates emotional connection with your audience.

The goal of the right content is to carry your brand’s ideas and values, and to explain clearly what you offer and what problems you solve.

Core elements of an effective social media strategy

  1. Goal
What do you want to achieve through your social media strategy? Brand awareness, more website visits, more calls, a higher-quality audience, or simply staying visible online?
  2. Audience research and analysis
To create content that attracts potential customers and makes them interact, you need to know who you are speaking to, what they need, what they care about, and what image they have (or you want them to have) of you.
  3. Competitor research and analysis
Who are your competitors? Do they have social profiles? Which posts perform best and get real interaction? By studying competitors, you can understand what tends to work and what to avoid.
  4. Content creation and distribution per platform
What content type works best on each platform? Facebook, Instagram and TikTok have different audiences and different expectations. Facebook traditionally favours text, but video keeps growing. Instagram started with photography, but video is becoming stronger there too.
  5. Metrics, analysis and continuous improvement
Identify what worked, which posts earned more likes, what content drove higher engagement, and adjust after you understand what did not perform well. That is how you move closer to your goals.

“All good, but I don’t have time. What should I do?”

If you understand that professional social media management is not just taking a quick phone photo and writing a few generic lines, then you will probably realise you do not have enough time for it.

Social media marketing is part of your business’s digital marketing. It requires focus and expertise in order to be planned and executed properly.
